Online Dating Rights. Mail Order Brides
PragueVietnamMoscowGuatemala

FOUR REASONS American men seek romance abroad: Prague, Ha Long Bay, Red Square, small villages in Latin America. Somehow meeting a Czech, Vietnamese, Russian or Peruvian/Colombian/Brazilian woman for a date at one of these exotic places is incomparably more exciting than meeting a hometown girl at the local coffeeshop. Opponents of a man's right to meet foreign women online never stop to consider how enjoyable it is to travel/work/live abroad and learn new cultures and languages while seeking a marriage partner.

Since her stated beef is "marketing practices," she should have called it the International Marketing of Brides Regulation Act despite the fact that there is no actual correlation between advertising methods and harm to women. Oh but its so easy to sensationalize and demonize by just dropping some screen shots on a reporter's desk.

Jeanne Smoot is the policy director at the Tahirih Justice Center, and the center's mission is to provide legal protections from abuse for immigrant women and girls. They offer direct legal services (leveraging both in-house and pro bono attorneys) as well as national public policy advocacy.

Jeanne witnesses, firsthand, horror stories of "brokered" marriages.

"Women are described like commodities -- one company pushes a package they offer as a 'Fresh Hot Sampler Plate,' like you can get at a restaurant."

She handed me printouts of advertising material from several international marriage broker websites. They ranged from poorly spelled to flat-out perverse, a vast cry from Anastasia's site, which touted its gorgeous women, sure, but also its IMBRA compliance and professional tone.

"Companies often hype the sexuality and submissiveness of these women, and that can appeal to men seeking someone they think they can control and abuse," she said. "When a man finds a woman in a catalog and is offered 'money-back' or 'satisfaction' guarantees, he feels ownership of that woman." Jeanne continued, "That sense of ownership very often leads to abuse. It's a pretty direct link."

I have Jeanne's printouts on my desk, and one of the most disturbing is this: "Having also been accused of asult (sic) by western women, who are usually the instigaters (sic) of domestic violence I can tell you … don't let it bother you." "It" is a history of violence, and the note is meant to reassure a potential client that his violent criminal history will not be a problem in securing a foreign wife.

The first six or seven pages of comments to this slanted article were very entertaining.

Advocacy groups that get taxpayer money for "protecting" foreign women and the thoughtless media call foreign woman a "mail order bride" if she met her husband via internet.  This is American imperialism, it is denigrating, insulting and portrays the women as helpless fools.

Last year the spineless Jeanne Smoot nervously tried to avoid the owner of Anastasia International (Dan Sykes) after he started seeking out the Tahirih Justice Center in order to meet with them at their Northern Virginia office.
Smoot and her colleagues at the Tahirih Justice Center were absolutely terrified that Dan Sykes would sue the Tahirih Justice Center so Layli Miller-Muro and Jeanne Smoot remained hidden in their protective shells.

Dan Sykes has an outgoing personality with ego and intelligence that has no boundaries. The Tahirih Justice Center ultimately had to meet with Dan. Once that happened Dan made a good faith effort to explain the misconceptions regarding International matchmaking. He painstakingly explained that Anastasia is primarily a communication and translation company. They don't arrange marriages or matches. Absolute proof of this is the fact that 90% of their business revenues are derived from their blind communication set up whereby male clients pay money to write to perspective females in another country. Anastasia makes their money by receiving credits paid for by male clients who pay for each communication attempt.

Both Smoot and Miller- Muro were completely surprised that Anastasia, one of the largest International dating companies is a communication company that facilitates Communication between consenting adults.

A year later and Smoot comes out of her shell and slaps Dan Sykes by  falsely suggesting that the IMO's advertising techniques are linked to violent relationships between American dating clients and foreign women.   The role of International matchmaking companies (or any dating site) is provide a venue for communication. Smoot's absurd claim that there is a link between dating sites that advertise foreign women and violent men is litigiously incorrect and would never stand up in a court of criminal law. She supports this horrific claim with NO empirical evidence. This would be like placing blame on a newspaper editor who allows a client to place an ad in the newspaper for a car that has mechanical problems a year or so later.

The Tahirih Justice Center continues to demonize legitimate matchmaking organizations while denying the truth. The courts will eventually be the venue of final recourse on issue of International matchmaking with facts and accurate information taking center stage. That's where the rubber hits the road.

Note that the TJC purposely claims to have aligned itself with other groups when creating IMBRA, defining "marriage broker" and isolating select dating services. Once isolated, the TJC and others engaged in slanderous and libelous attacks on these businesses and their customers.  The guilt was spread and no single person or organization can be blamed should business be lost due to tarnished reputations. Even senators and other officials made such unfounded remarks.
